As we get into summer, we find ourselves enjoying the sunshine, family gatherings, socialising and there is a change from our regular routine. It’s a time to relax, have fun, and create lasting memories. However, it’s also very easy to go off track and gain weight!

Today, I share some common causes of summer weight gain and provide practical tips on how to maintain a healthy lifestyle throughout the season.  These are:

  • Change in Routine: During the summer holidays with children or grandchildren being home, it’s easy to fall out of our regular routine. You get busier, and this can lead to poor meal planning and relying on convenient, unhealthy options like pizza or fast food. To avoid weight gain, make meal planning a priority.  Plan and prepare nutritious meals in advance, incorporating fresh ingredients and plenty of vegetables. As a helpful resource, I have a free salad recipe book that you can get below.
  • Socialising: Summer is a time for meeting up; parties, barbecues, and picnics with friends and family. These events often involve indulgent foods. Instead of giving in to temptation, bring a healthy option like a flavourful satisfying salad to share. We tend to overlook the importance of vegetables during social gatherings, but they can taste good.  Download my free salad recipes below  for delicious salad ideas to impress your loved ones.
  • Sugary Temptations: When temperatures rise, we may find ourselves reaching for cooling sugary treats to cool down and energise. It’s perfectly okay to enjoy an occasional sweet indulgence, but be mindful of your choices. Instead of sugary drinks or ice creams every day, opt for healthier alternatives like infused water or homemade frozen fruit popsicles. Remember, moderation is key to maintaining a balanced approach to summer treats.
  • Sedentary Lifestyle: The heat can make us more inclined to adopt a sedentary lifestyle. However, it’s important to prioritise movement and some physical activity to prevent weight gain. Incorporate enjoyable activities into your routine that you can do with your family, such as short walks, cycling, or hiking.

The key to avoiding weight gain over the summer is finding balance. Don’t let the season derail your progress; instead, let it be an opportunity for growth and maintaining a vibrant, healthy lifestyle.
