As a health coach, I work with busy women who are ready to take charge of their health and create lasting, meaningful change. Today, let’s talk about some of the biggest myths around type 2 diabetes, and the truth that can help you reduce your risk.

Myth #1: Once Diagnosed, That’s It.

Many people believe that a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes is a lifelong sentence. They think, “This is just how it will be for me from now on.” But that’s simply not true. Unlike type 1 diabetes, which can’t be reversed, type 2 diabetes is different. Through dietary and lifestyle changes, it’s possible to manage and even reverse type 2 diabetes.

Remember, “Make a change to see a change.” Don’t give up on your health. Ignoring high blood sugar now can lead to complications down the road. Take action now to prevent future problems.

Myth #2: “I’m Not Overweight, So I’m Not at Risk.”

You don’t need to be overweight to be at risk for type 2 diabetes. Many people with a healthy BMI are still at risk. In fact, certain ethnicities, such as South Asians, are at a much higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes, even at lower BMIs. Be mindful, because your weight isn’t the only indicator of your health.

Myth #3: “I Don’t Eat Much Sugar, So I’m Safe.”

Sugar is certainly a factor, but it’s not the whole story. Refined carbs, like white bread and pasta, can also contribute to type 2 diabetes risk. And then there’s fried food, how much of that are you eating? These foods can all play a role in raising blood sugar levels.

Diabetes Is About Your Health, Long-Term.

Some people brush off their slightly high sugar levels, thinking it’s no big deal.

But do you know the long-term implications of diabetes? Left unchecked, diabetes can lead to serious complications: nerve damage, kidney issues, heart disease, and even loss of vision.

This is something to take seriously from the very beginning.

It’s Time to Take Charge, Not Wait for a Diagnosis.
