Exercise is essential to be healthy, especially as it also releases chemicals called endorphins that make you feel good, which is why we feel so much happier after exercising.

So many people join the gym in January, all motivated and excited to exercise. However, often the enthusiasm decreases over time and so do their visits to the gym. In fact the gym membership that they have committed to is a reminder of their failure to exercise, which makes many feel guilty.

I want to talk about an exercise that you can do anywhere and at anytime. It is FREE and all you need is a pair of comfortable shoes. Walking is one of the best exercises you can do.

I like it and recommend that my clients first focus on their daily steps because daily activity is essential. After creating a healthy habit of walking, they then build on from this and increase their structured exercise.

I like walking because:

  • You can either do it on your own or you can do it with friends and make it social.
  • You can do it anytime and are not restricted
  • You can do it anywhere – in the city, a local park, near the office during your lunch break, when picking the children from school, commuting to work or in the evenings.

One reason many say they cannot do it is because they do not have the time. Time should not be limiting anyone to exercise.

You do not have to walk continuously for an hour, as you can break it up and walk for 20 minutes in the mornings or at lunch time and then walk another 15 to 20 minutes again in the evenings.

Also, you build it up at a pace that works for you. You don’t have to walk 10,000 steps, look at what you have been doing and use that as a guide to gradually increase it.

Track how much you are walking daily as so many people think they walk more than they do.

And remember to make a new habit it takes time and effort. Plan for it, if it is not on your schedule it will not happen.

After watching this video please write down how you will begin to get more active and schedule time to do it.

Have a great week ahead!
