Are you still enjoying your Diwali treats? The festival season is a joyful time to indulge, but it’s essential to remember that what we put into our bodies can have a lasting impact on our health.
It’s easy to think, “It’s just one day,” or promise, “I’ll start tomorrow.” But as we head into the holiday season with Christmas around the corner, it can be tempting to keep pushing your health goals to January. Then, January comes, life gets busy, and once again, prioritising your health falls to the bottom of the list.
But your health can’t be ignored. Taking charge of it now is critical, especially if you’re at a higher risk for type 2 diabetes.
World Diabetes Day is on November 14th, serving as a reminder to raise awareness about diabetes and understand how we can reduce its risks. Many people believe, “Isn’t diabetes genetic?” While genetics do play a role, lifestyle choices and diet significantly impact your risk for type 2 diabetes.
For South Asians, the risk is even higher. We are at an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, even at a lower BMI than other populations.
Important Factors to Consider
Monitor Your BMI: For South Asians, being overweight starts at a BMI of 23 and obesity at a BMI of 27. If you’re in this range, it’s crucial not to ignore it. Check your BMI HERE on the NHS website.
Your Diet Matters: Are you eating a lot of refined carbs? Foods like white rice, bread, and pasta can raise your blood sugar levels and put you at risk.
Sugar and Refined Carbs: While sugar is often the focus, refined carbs and fried foods are just as harmful.
Balanced Nutrition: Are you getting enough protein and healthy fats? These nutrients are essential for stabilising blood sugar and reducing cravings.
Don’t wait until diabetes becomes a diagnosis. It’s never too early to start making changes and take control of your health. Taking these small steps now can make a big difference in the long run.
