Do you enjoy Indian snacks like bhel puri or chaat?

When we consider why we like these snacks so much, it’s often because of the flavours and textures they have.

These dishes are a fusion of different tastes as they have some crunch, spice, tanginess and a little sweetness too. However, they are not known to be the healthiest snacks because they are deep fried, high in fat and sauces often contain lots of sugar and additives.

Instead, to satisfy that craving, why not try a guilt-free alternative. My chickpea bowl recipe has incorporated the same flavours and textures that you look for in chaat except, it is also a healthy snack.

Recipe:

Chaat ingredients:

1 cup boiled chickpeas

1 tomato, chopped finely

1 small potato, boiled and diced

¼ cup chopped coriander

½ small onion, chopped finely

½ cup pomegranate seeds

1 tbsp. roasted peanuts (optional)

Dressing:

1 tsp tamarind paste (or to taste)

¼ cup natural organic yogurt

1 green chili, chopped finely

Sea salt to taste

Mix the dressing in a bowl.

In a large bowl combine the chaat ingredients.  Then spoon into two bowls and layer the dressing over.  Serves 2.

My recipe has chickpeas as the base ingredient, which makes it a high protein and fibre snack. The chickpeas are also very satisfying so this is a great snack for when you need something filling to keep you going for a while.

With other ingredients including onion, tomato, tamarind, chilli, potato and pomegranate this snack will satisfy those cravings for savoury Indian snacks.

Make some simple healthy swaps, have this delicious, colourful snack when you’re hungry, don’t have much time or feel like some chaat-like flavours!
